‘Roe Deer Skull’ acrylic painting by Michelle Maiden 2011. Still life painting of a skull my friend gave me whilst I was making a traditional shamanic drum with her. I used the dynamic lines to add a sense of life to an otherwise dead object. Another friend remarked that the horns looked to her like hands held upwards in prayer.
‘Hengest’ ink drawing by Michelle Maiden 2009. From a bronze stylized Celtic horse ornament, currently in the British museum. Hengest is an Anglo Saxon word for horse, so while anachronistic still felt fitting as an ancient British term.
