'Giants of Robin Hoods Stride' painting by Michelle Maiden 2009
Elemental earth spirits, rock giants who slumber within the landscape. They on occasion wake, sending low creaks and rumbles of movement deep up from within the earth.
This painting is resulting from a photograph my friend took of Robin Hoods Stride – a glacial rock formation in Derbyshire, England. Upon looking at the photo I saw many faces within the rock formation. After that I emphasised and developed them in the painting.
Seeing faces and figures in natural forms is an example of Pareidolia. This occurs as a result of our human brains ability and need to find patterns in things.
